CHAPTER SEVEN

As Vivienne glanced around the packed boardwalk, she felt a little lightheaded. It was a beautiful Sunday morning, with clear skies and a cool breeze coming off the water. Despite the chill in the air, her skin felt overheated. Nerves made her feel slightly queasy, but the last thing she wanted to do was faint before she had a chance to show her work in public for the first time.

Second-guessing everything, she glanced down at herself and wished she had chosen a different outfit. The white and black polka dot shirt, black pants, and stylishly cut black jacket seemed more New York than Ever After, especially with the sassy pink belt and heels she had paired with it. She’d thought she had looked professional, classy, but seeing the casual attire of everyone around her, she just felt awkward and out of place.

When Griffin told her that he had arranged for her to show her work at the local farmers market, she had never expected such a large event. Stalls and booths lined the walkways of the boardwalk and took up available space in parking lots of businesses and restaurants that were closed for the day. For an event that only lasted a few hours, a lot of work had been put into the setup, and there was an eclectic mix of businesses represented.

Although the market hadn’t opened yet, a number of people were already walking around. Since they had arrived, Vivienne could tell Griffin hadn’t been joking about the kiss on the Ferris wheel. By the number of glares she’d received from various women, word had obviously spread about their relationship status. Other people simply seemed curious, but all of the attention was still making her uncomfortable.

Turning away from the probing stares, she studied her display of paintings under the white canopy. She wasn’t sure how Griffin had managed it, but a beautiful sign with her name engraved into polished wood had been suspended in front of the tent. Most of the paintings that were arranged on the tables had been done during her road trip, but the larger paintings set up on easels behind the tables were all pieces she had completed while she had been overseas.

After a frantic phone call, Aria had sent all of the paintings Vivienne had been keeping in storage back in New York. Thank god for overnight shipping. It had been impossible to select what to show, so she had asked Griffin and his family and friends to help her decide. Not that she’d really had a choice. As soon as the crates had been delivered yesterday morning, they had shown up in force and unpacked everything.

It had been nerve-racking to hear them discuss her paintings. However, instead of being critical of her work, they had shocked her by arguing amongst themselves over who got to buy what piece. After they were done claiming their favorite paintings, a new fight had started about how much she should charge. She had thrown out a few prices, but they had rolled right over her and given her more than she wanted.
